Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Waking Up Everyday Knowing That What You’re Gonna Do That Day Is Something You Love. - Kate Gremillion

What’s up FLY Zone,

Today we get the opportunity to hear from Kate Gremillion (pronounced Gra-me-on). Kate is the founder of Mavenly + Co., a community of young women having honest conversations about navigating college, career + lief with purpose and intention. She provides workshops for women transitioning to college and the workplace and specializes in women in leadership, interpersonal communication and public relations.

So I connected with Kate through Instagram. I started following her MAVENLYCO account after I saw a like from her account on one of my photos. I went over to the account, checked out the content and loved what was being posted, so I went to mavenly.co to learn more about Mavenly + Co., and who created it.

On the website, I learned that Kate founded Mavenly + Co. I then read a letter from her sharing her story and how Mavenly + Co was born. I thought to myself, this is great. Let’s reach out to Kate and she if she would be able to come on as a guest.

She of course said yes, and I am grateful that she did, as I love connecting with positive people like Kate. It was cool talking with her because she manifested her goal into reality, after having a sort-of quarter-life crisis, once she was working in the real world. She was open and honest about her experiences and also provided valuable takeaways that can be applied today.

Though we did not talk about it on the show, a cool fact about Kate is that she is also a podcast host. Her show is called Mavenly. I listened to it the other day, and the show is great. It’s women having honest conversations with modern women about work and life.

This episode is for you if Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings is what you want to do. Whether you are a guy or girl, young or old, this episode will help you FLY.

Time for the show!

Her 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • Reducing Overwhelm, Building Confidence

In this episode, you’ll discover:

Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Choosing Life, Over The Stories You Want Life To Tell About You. - Life Decided

What’s up FLY Zone,

Brothers, Colin and Riley Nielsen join me on the podcast. Colin is 7 years older than Riley. I met Colin and Riley through their Instagram account, @LifeDecided, after they liked one of my photos. I went over to check out their account, which is full of motivational content, and then checked out their blog, LifeDecided.com. I loved the content that they have on their platforms, so I reached out to them using the Direct Messaging capability of Instagram on April 23, 2016 at 8:27pm.

I said to them:

Hey Colin and Riley, love the work you guys are doing as Decision Coaches. Very inspiring.

I am the host of Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings, a podcast where I interview people like you guys. Would love to connect and have the both of you on as guests and hear your stories. The show would be 30 minutes and we would meet on Skype. Would you guys be game to come on as special guests?

They followed up with me shortly after and then scheduled a time to come on the show.

Let me tell you a little about Colin and Riley. They are two brothers dedicated to creating and cultivating the lifestyle they believe people were meant to have. They believe that true change starts with a decision, but there are prerequisites to making that decision in it’s honest and sincere form. They help people get to that point, then flourish after.

We talked for about 50 minutes.

Their 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • Habits
  • The mind
  • Success

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Riley and Colin’s stories
  • What Life Decided is
  • How the relationship is between Colin and Riley
  • How to figure out what you want to do
  • How to form Habits
  • The Life Decided Blueprint
  • Why they use Instagram as their #1 platform
  • 3 Keys for building your brand on Instagram
  • What Colin and Riley’s roles are in Life Decided
  • What's next for Life Decided
  • Each brother’s definition of Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings:
    • Colin said, Fulfilling Life's Yearnings is uncovering that yearning and then working on it constantly because the more you work on it, the more you’ll be able to define it.
    • Riley said, Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings is choosing life over the stories you want life to tel about you.

Take Yourself Seriously, Take Your Ideas Seriously, & Take Action. w/ Amanda Zimmerman

April 27, 2016
00:0000:00

What’s up FLY Zone,

Today’s guest is the beautiful and smart and adventurous, Amanda Zimmerman. She is also my #wcw for the week. (Hey Amanda :) ). Amanda is another guest that I reached out to online, after I saw her mentioned in a post on Facebook. I follow her mom, Sue B. Zimmerman, because she’s an Instagram expert, and as I was checking out her page, I came across a post that was congratulating Amanda, who was just recently on a podcast, sharing her experience from living in four cities in four months.

When I saw that, I thought to myself, that is so badass. And what really got me interested in connecting with her is the fact that she is a Millennial as well. As a matter of fact, she is a FLY Millennial.

Amanda is not your average 20-something. After graduating college in 2014 and working at her first 9-to-5, she left her unfulfilling job and lived in 4 cities in 4 months to explore how to truly live with purpose.

Her personal blog, dresseswithpockets.net, houses tales from her nomadic personal journey.

Her 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • Why college doesn’t prepare students for the “real world”
  • Putting yourself in uncomfortable and unfamiliar situations to push yourself and figure out what you want to do with yourself
  • Cold emailing and reaching out to strangers

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Amanda’s story (01:20).
  • How Amanda was able to take the leap to leave her job and how her journey started (03:34).
  • If there was any fear/doubt in her mind about what she was doing and how she dealt with it (08:08).
  • How she would address people from the different cities she went to, asking her why she was doing what she did, and how she was able to make money (13:00).
  • What Amanda was doing in each city (15:15).
  • If there was a point during her experience that she thought she was plateauing (19:26).
  • What Amanda got out of her experience from going to four cities in four months and whether she found her calling – she did. Leadership and Personal development for teens (21:30).
  • Why Amanda feels that college doesn’t prepare students for the “real world” – college didn’t stress the importance of networking; actually getting to know people (26:30).
  • The worst thing that can happen when you reach out to a person – they can say no. If they do say no, those are the people you don’t want to meet with anyways (29:20).
  • What wakes Amanda up in the morning and ready to live (30:00).
  • What she did can be replicated. Just take the mindset she had and apply it where you live (32:00).
  • What are steps we could take to do the same thing in our own backyard (33:20).
      • Go on Twitter and Instagram and find local people who you are interested in and tap into other people’s social media networks
      • Send them a message to meet
  • Did reaching out to people come easy to Amanda – Her suggestion is to force yourself to do it (35:25).
  • A few books that Amanda recommends and the one that inspired her journey (38:15).
  • How her current job fits into what she wants to do because of her VIP (Value, interests, and principals) (42:20).
  • Amanda’s definition of Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings (44:45) – Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings is Taking your seriously.
  • The importance of journaling and when Amanda does it – you can google prompts for journaling (47:20).

Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Believing in Yourself and Having Conviction Even When The Odds Seem Against You and Pushing Yourself To Try New Things. - Anna-Kay Thomas

What’s up FLY Zone,

I loved having Anna-Kay, today’s guest, on the show with me, as she is a fascinating person.  When you first hear her on the show, you can tell that she has an energetic and infectious personality, and would be cool to hang out with, but I am getting a little ahead of myself here.  Let’s start with how we connected.  I connected with Anna-Kay on levo.com because I was interested her profile.  For those of you that are new, levo.com is a platform that arms you with the tools to develop your talent, build connections with peers, mentors, and jobs, and stay inspired day in and day out as you grow and develop. They believe you can create a life you’re passionate about.

So I saw Anna-Kay’s profile when I was looking for new people to have on the show, and I messaged her about Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings because that’s what I do.  I find interesting people on social media and I message them about coming on to share their story and it’s the coolest process to experience, even when the people aren’t able to come on, and fortunately for us, Anna-Kay was able to come on to share her story with us.

Before you listen to the show, allow me to share with you why I wanted to have her on.  It was what I read in profile…

Following years of hard work, Anna-Kay’s life change for the better after she competed for and won the opportunity to be a Social Buzz Reporter on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live hosted by Nick Lachey.  She has since interviewed the likes of Kevin Jonas, D.M.C., Hoda Kotb, John Starks and more for various news outlets.  Previously, Anna-Kay demonstrated her event coverage talent and editorial prowess for Fox’s The Hot Zone and The International Fashion Times.

After reading that, I thought that she would be a great guest on the show and she was.

Enjoy!

Her 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • Entertainment
  • Celebrity News
  • Lifestyle (Fitness, Food, Travel)

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Anna-Kay’s story
  • How Anna-Kay became the Social Buzz reporter on VH1’s Big Morning Buzz Live hosted by Nick Lachey
  • How she made her way into the entertainment media world
  • Anna-Kay's checkered path from neuroscience to entertainment media

Traveling Has Been My Yearning Since I Was A Boy and I Made It My Life. w/ Gary Mancuso

April 11, 2016
00:0000:00

Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Having A Philosophy About What You Are About and What You Want To and Going After It. - Gary Mancuso

What’s up FLY Zone,

Today my guest is Gary Mancuso. I was introduced to Gary by Zephan Moses Blaxberg from the Year of Purpose Podcast because he thought that Gary would be a great guest for Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings and he was.

After a couple of emails back and forth, Gary scheduled an interview and we connected on Skype on Wednesday, April 6, 2016, to talk about his life.

Gary Mancuso is a writer, traveler, entrepreneur and speaker who had a burning desire to travel ever since he was a boy. Then, the summer before his senior year in high school, he left his family home in Ohio and drove to California.

Arriving in Los Angeles with four dollars in his pocket, he slept on the beach for a spell until he got his footing. As an adult, he traveled the world widely, including many of its most remote wildernesses and traditional cultures. At times, his travels took him into conflict zones, failed states and those with horrific governance.

When he wasn’t wondering off somewhere, Gary studied economics, communications, and political science and got a master’s degree in International Relations from the University of Southern California.

After finishing his education, he headed business development in the trading room of a large regional bank. There, he developed an automation payments service targeted toward Intellectual Property Law firms that became the industry standard in the US.

Leaving his position at the bank halfway into the first decade of this new century, he embarked on a six-year global expedition into many of the world’s remaining intact traditional cultures and wildernesses.

His memoir of this unique experience, “The Last Places on Earth: Journeys in Our Disappearing World” was released in summer, 2014. Along with his passion for travel, Gary is an avid trekker, swimmer, scuba diver, environmentalist, and private pilot.

His 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • Travel to exotic, traditional cultures and great wildernesses
  • International and domestic affairs--political, economic, environmental
  • Motivation, personal growth and realizing one's life goals

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • Gary’s story
  • What inspired him to a life of travel
  • What he did for 6 years for his life and what he took away from that experience
  • His personal message
  • His book, The Last Places on Earth
  • His definition of Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings

Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Being Comfortable with Where You Are & Not Wasting Time On Things That You Do Not Have. - Mary Phillips Carlson

What’s up FLY Zone,

Today I have Mary Phillips Carlson joining me on the show and we had enjoyable conversation about her personal and professional life. I’ll let you in on a little secret… This was her first time being on a podcast and she did great. Mary told me that when I first reached out to her to be on the show, she said she was confronted with her comfort zone and wasn’t sure if she wanted to come on, but she stepped out of it and said yes.

It was interesting to hear how Mary took control to get to where she is in life. What I enjoyed about Mary was her candidness, her willingness to share her vulnerabilities, and her detailed discussion of the values important to her when looking for a profession.

Before you dive in, let me tell you a little bit about Mary. Mary is a strategic thinker and leader working in the field of higher education. She is never satisfied that the end result is the final result, believing there is always room to grow. Mary is a voracious reader, a believer in something bigger than herself, and a deeply loyal friend. She is also the creator of You Me Serendipity, a blog focused on recognizing your personal version of perfection and not letting the idea of someone else's perfection hold you back. Mary is a transplant to the south after growing up in the northeast and spending the early part of her career in the Midwest.

Her 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

Setting and going after your goals
Establishing your personal values
The importance of advocating for yourself

In this episode, you’ll discover:

Mary’s story
Her love for higher education
How she navigated her way to the position she’s in
Her career advice as a professional
That her job must align with these 3 values
One of the problems with technology that is negatively affecting you
Her blog: You Me Serendipity and the inspiration behind it
Her definition of Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings

Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Being Happy w/ Yourself. - Jasmine Mann

What’s up FLY Zone,

Today’s guest comes from the Mitten (Michigan), went to Michigan State (Go Green), and now lives in Huntington Beach, California.

I connected with Jasmine on Instagram, after I started following her account because I thought the content she was putting out was dope. When I came across her account I saw that she was doing some interesting work, as she is an analyst in the airline industry, a model, an author, and an actress, so it was a no-brainer for me that I was going to reach out to her to be on the podcast with me.

When we did the show, I thought that she was very easy to talk with and I loved hearing her story, especially since we’re both from the same state. Jasmine was so chill when she was talking, but that’s probably her Cali side coming out.

When you listen to her talk, you’ll hear someone that is genuinely in love with life after having an awakening that changed the path that she was on. She came out of a dark place, and the way that she was able to do that was through writing, and writing helped her so much, that she self-published her first book, Swimming in Stars. She even read a passage from her book that was most meaningful to her.

Jasmine opens up to us, so come hang out with us as she talks about The Writer, The Dreamer, and The Girl inside of her.

Her 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • Recovering from toxic relationships
  • Making positive life changes
  • Reaching goals

In this episode, you’ll:

  • Learn about Jasmine and how she is Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings

My favorite part of doing these podcasts is participating in the conversation they provoke. Each episode, I ask one FLY question. This episode, it is this:

Question: Jasmine talks about how she afraid to do the things that she does now (modeling, acting, and writing) because her story was that she couldn’t do them, so when she got out to Cali, she created a bucket list and started going through that list and getting out of her comfort zone. What things are you afraid to do or would like to do? Make a bucket list and start doing them. They’re easier to do than you think. Share your answer on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.

Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings Is Being Passionate About Growth. - Trevor Ragan

What’s up FLY Zone,

So today I have Trevor Ragan from TrainUgly.com joining me on the show.  Been wanting to have him as a guest on the show because I think the work that he is doing is awesome.

He’s one of those people doing good stuff in the world, that he wakes up each morning, fired up to get out bed, inspired to read, research, learn, and share as much as possible with students, athletes, coaches, and teachers.

He’s on an adventure to challenge and question EVERYTHING that we think we know about sports, education, and development.  And through his adventures, he’s worked with best-selling authors, olympic coaches, professional athletes, renowned professors, and thousands of coaches, teachers, students, and players form all over the world.

Those experiences have helped him discover some incredibly important research in the fields of motor learning, performance science, and psychology that should have totally changed the way we train and develop students, athletes, and people in general - but unfortunately, they have not.

It’s Trevor’s mission to change that.

His 3 Favorite Topics To Talk About are:

  • How Learning Works
  • Growth Mindset
  • Misconceptions of Learning

In this episode, you’ll discover:

  • TrainUgly.com
  • What happened when he was moments away from achieving his childhood dream
  • What the most successful people do, that many don’t
  • That the hunger to learn got him going on this adventure
  • Sharing his work changed his life
  • His approach to not having the piece of paper we get from university
  • How Learning Works
  • What you need to know about Growth Mindset
  • What the amygdala is and what it does to us
  • Trevor’s definition of Fulfilling Life’s Yearnings

Question: Trevor says that we learn best by doing, not by watching from the sidelines. What are you afraid to do? Do that thing. It’ll be ugly as you learn it, but you’ll grow from the experience. Share your answer on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn.
